Miami University Takes Manhattan Carnegie Hall A Musical Celebration Performs The Alma Mater

Now’s it time to finish with one of Miami’s most important and long standing traditions. The words to the Miami University Alma Mater were penned by Alfred Upham as a student. Alfred Upham went on to become Miami University’s longest serving president. The music was written by Raymond Burke who founded the men’s glee club in 1907 Today, we premiere a new arrangement of the Miami Alma Mater for chorus and orchestra in an arrangement done by our own Dean Jim Lentini This new version uses an original verse by President Upham and a verse recently written in the Myaamia language the language of the Miami Tribe, the tribe who shares our name and is intimately connected to us as partners in learning, deeply embedded in the DNA of what Miami is all about [music begins] [orchestra playing] [music rises] [light vocalizations by choir] [chorus singing] Old Miami from thy hillcrest,
Thou hast watched the decades roll; While thy sons have quested from thee,
Sturdy hearted, pure of soul. Old Miami! New Miami!
Days of old and days to be; Weave the story of thy glory,
Our Miami, here’s to thee! [orchestra continues to play] Old Miami! New Miami!
Days of old and days to be; Weave the story of thy glory,
Our Miami, here’s to thee! [music continues playing] Our Miami, you were founded
In our nation’s early days; Now we join with generations
In this song of love and praise. Old Miami! New Miami!
Days of old and days to be; Weave the story of thy glory,
Our Miami, here’s to thee! [vocalizations] [applause]
