Q&A with a Food and Beverage Leader | Discover the Disney College Program

Hi, my name is Amy. I’m a guest experience manager here in Magic Kingdom in outdoor foods, and I’m ready to answer some of your questions today! So, I started at The Pinocchio Village Haus as a front of house cast member, and I absolutely loved it. I was convinced I had the best job in the world, and sometimes I still want to go back and pick up a shift. In quick-service food and beverage, you really have endless possibilities. You could be in a theme park. You could be at a resort. You could be at one of the water parks or even at Disney Springs. And within that, you could be in a quick-service restaurant. You could be at outdoor foods with me. You could be in one of the stands and out in the park. Being in food and beverage gives you a lot of autonomy. You get to spend a lot more time with those guests. You get to make a lot of magic and create a lot of happiness in a way that you wouldn’t get to in a role that’s a lot more fast-paced. The greatest challenge of this role is that you get to be a problem solver, but when you get to solve problems, you also get to be a hero! So, you can be on the counter filling orders, you can be back in the kitchen preparing that food, or you can be out in the dining room getting those refills, telling guests, “Happy birthday!” – really creating those moments for them that make them feel like very important, individual guests. In food and beverage, you get so much guest interaction. That’s my favorite part of being in food and beverage. You get to build those connections with those guests. There were lots of guests who were Annual Passholders that would come and look for me to see me each trip and tell me what I missed from the last time that I saw them. You can create lots of magic in food and beverage in ways that you might not get to in another line of business. The other day I met a guest who was in her 80s and had never been to Walt Disney World before. She had a first visit button on, and I was able to give her her very first Mickey bar courtesy of Mickey Mouse, because I knew that he would want her to have it. You get to have so much fun because of all of those guests interactions! You can do little things that really turn their whole day around and make a big difference, and you get to be a part of creating so much happiness for these guests every day.
